We love to support other local, Big Island businesses, especially ones that are just starting out. When we make connections and meet people who are like-minded, friendly and hard-working, it makes us at Sundot Marine, motivated to help support these people in our community. A few months ago, we met Summer Martin, a local Hilo girl who works at Mo's Fish and Chips while growing her own business on the side. She uses her unique images to make Hawaii-inspired pouches that reflect what brings her joy. We caught up with her and asked her a few questions and she helped us create some custom Marlin pouches for our own private collection.

SUNDOT: You're so young (only 23 years old!) How did you start your business? Can you tell us a little bit more about it?
SUMMER: Since I was a teenager I have pursued my love for nature photography. I thought of many different ways to display my photographs as prints or on a canvas but I knew this was not the only way I wanted to share my love for my home, Hawaii Island. I have gotten great inspiration from local Hawaii artists. I teamed up with a small manufacturing company based right here in the U.S.A and expanded my products to include a range of pouch bags. I am very proud to say all of my pouch bags are made in America. My love for my home and lifestyle is shared through my photos. They are simple and beautiful - just stunning beach scenes and colorful flowers.

SUNDOT: Where are you selling your pouches?
SUMMER: In Kailua-Kona, my photography pouches are currently being sold at Nani Kai Cottage at the Kamehameha Mall, and Kona Oceanfront Gallery and Sugar Momo Boutique which are both located on Ali'i Drive. I also sell them at the Shops at Mauna Lani, Kozy's Tiki Palace and Perfect Harmony in Hilo. Now my pouches are on O'ahu at Riches Kahala!
SUNDOT: That's awesome! Can you tell us a little bit more about your pouches. I know a girl or guy can't have too many pouches, so what's unique about yours?
SUMMER: My customers fall in love with my pouches because with every photo there is a feeling of my home in Hawaii - a lifestyle I want to share with others that is calm and tropical, a sense of paradise. For me it truly is! I grew up spending my days in the sun and planting hibiscus flowers. In fact I still do =)
SUNDOT: We love nature and the outdoors too. Can you tell us how fishing and the ocean inspire you?
SUMMER: My best memories of fishing were spent on my Uncle's fishing boat with my Dad, Uncle, brother and cousins on Oahu. We would start from Port Lock and head over to Waikiki. We would anchor off of Waikiki beach to fish and swim for hours. My Dad would make jokes to my Uncle like he was an old sea captain. The best part about fishing was being together and having a fun time, laughing the whole day.

SUNDOT: Those are the good ole days! You must have grown up eating fresh fish and I bet it's still a big part of your diet. Tell us about one of your favorite places to eat fresh fish.
SUMMER: I am a BIG fish & chips lover! If you are looking for a good plate of fish & chips you need to check out MO's Fish & Chips right on Waianuenue Ave, Downtown Hilo. I should know because they are good family friends and I eat here at least once a week! They have fresh weekly specials like fresh Mahi Mahi, Ono and Ahi. I love the Captains Platter - one of the fish house faves! It's the best way to try a bit of everything. SO ONO!
SUNDOT: We had such a blast meeting up with you and making a couple of Sundot Marine Marlin Pouches. Can you tell us what you enjoyed about the whole process?
SUMMER: I had the honor of collaborating with Sundot Marine in making their Marlin print into a pouch. I really loved the way this print turned out! Sundot Marine designs are so classic! And I enjoyed working with Tina. She has a great vision for her family's company. I look forward to future collaborations!

SUNDOT: We really enjoyed working with you too! What are some of the goals you have for your company?
SUMMER: My goal is to support small, Hawaii-based companies like Sundot Marine. My heart does a happy dance when I can help out another local business with new merchandise. I can also do custom pouch bags. If you have a design idea I can help you out!
SUNDOT: Epic. We will be sure to spread the word and continue to support you in your dreams. How can people get in touch with you?
SUMMER: Follow me on instagram @summer_tm and check out my pouches! You can also email me on:
